Ruxtown villagers on Etheria.

Here is an interesting image from the season one She-Ra episode "Book Burning". In this scene we see the villagers ordered to step back by the Horde Troopers. Upon careful inspection you will notice that the crowd is actually comprised of numerous character models from the infamous season two He-Man episode "Monster on the Mountain". It is interesting to see them colored differently and placed in a throwaway crowd shot.

"The Stolen Smiles" #3

Here are the remaining four pages of "The Stolen Smiles", a story that appeared in the very first issue of the UK Princess of Power comic. I cannot help but think that there are some similarities between this story and the She-Ra season one episode "The Laughing Dragon"...

Orko's comic strip #23

Almost every issue of the UK Masters of the Universe comic featured an Orko comic strip on the inside front cover. As this Blog continues I will try and feature all of them for your amusement. Here I present the "Orko the Magician" comic strip from issue twenty-three. King Randor orders Orko about once more!

"The Stolen Smiles" #2

Here are pages five to eight of "The Stolen Smiles", a story that appeared in the very first issue of the UK Princess of Power comic. The final panel on page eight shows Shadow Weaver striking a rather dramatic pose! There are some questionable pieces of dialogue throughout this story...

Outside the castle...

Here is a visually good-looking panel to start off the second part of "The Eyes of the Serpent" story from issue thirty of the UK Masters of the Universe comic. My only real gripe with this illustration is that Castle Grayskull does not look as big and imposing as it should. "The Eyes of the Serpent" was a great two-part story that I hope to scan and upload at some point in the future!

"The Stolen Smiles" #1

Here are the first four pages of "The Stolen Smiles", a story that appeared in the very first issue of the UK Princess of Power comic. In this rather bizarre story the Evil Horde's latest scheme inadvertently results in the population of Etheria becoming sad. She-Ra's plan to spread happiness in one particular village is unique to say the least...

Orko's comic strip #21

Almost every issue of the UK Masters of the Universe comic featured an Orko comic strip on the inside front cover. As this Blog continues I will try and feature all of them for your amusement. Here I present the "Orko the Magician" comic strip from issue twenty-one. Once again, King Randor has ordered Orko to tidy up!

Cold-looking bedroom...

In this illustration from the 1985 UK Masters of the Universe annual we can see Prince Adam asleep in his room, with Cringer asleep at his feet. The amusing thing about this illustration is that this bedroom is incredibly cold-looking and uninviting when compared to the lush colors and warm glow of Prince Adam's bedroom in the Filmation cartoon!

A brief review #007 - "The Curse of the Spellstone"

As many of you will know, in 2010 I published The unofficial cartoon guide to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. At 300+ pages the book features 700+ pieces of trivia, 460+ deleted scenes, 360+ examples of animation reuse, 380+ quotes, 50+ abandoned episodes, and a LOT more! It is the book that NO fan of the Filmation series can live without! BUY IT NOW!

As an incentive, here is my brief review and rating (as they appear in the book) for "The Curse of the Spellstone"...

This episode has many good things going for it; best of all are the two storylines that run concurrently. We feel a real sense of danger as those in the Royal Palace are threatened by one of the best plot devices in the series in the Creeping Horak. And the action-packed adventures of the Heroic Warriors as they battle Skeletor's Hover Robots and the Fire People is executed to perfection. At times the script is a tad haphazard, switching locations just as we are getting settled. There is little to no character writing in this episode, but that does not matter. This episode revels in the fact that it is an entertaining action-adventure episode. 7/10

Now, may I ask; what is YOUR rating?

Skeletor and his clones.

No. You are not seeing things. These are not Skeletor's two brothers. In the 1987 Masters of the Universe annual we see Skeletor clone himself in an effort to overpower He-Man! The thing to notice is that while the two other Skeletors are clearly based on the Filmation model sheets, the gesturing Skeletor is not. This is most notable if you compare their faces...

Hordak's space suit.

One of the last of the He-Man and She-Ra crossover episodes "Shera Makes A Promise" features a brief but very memorable appearance from an incredibly dangerous-looking Hordak. In an effort to destroy He-Man and She-Ra Hordak dons an impressive suit of armor, filled to the brim with weapons! As you can see the artists put a great deal of work into the design. Which only makes it more of a shame when you consider that Hordak's attack on the heroes last about two seconds; then he decides to flee! This armor always looked so impressive that I am sure a writer could have written an entire episode around it...

Mer-Man swims.

This fantastic illustration of Mer-Man by Robin Davies appeared in the Ladybird book "Skeletor's Ice Attack". Not only is the angle on the character rather dramatic with the villain coming straight towards the reader, but the fact that only part of the murky depths of the sea are illustrated around the character make it all the more striking. Also, if you look carefully, you can see the eyes of Mer-Man's servants, the Sea People, all around him!

She-Ra script: "Into Etheria" #9

For your entertainment I present to you the rarely seen final script for "Into Etheria"; the very first episode of the She-Ra series. Reading through Larry DiTillio's script you will see a show that is still very much in development. Certain pieces of dialogue were either rewritten or removed during the actual production of the episode. You will also see some interesting notes about characters and locations during some of the scene directions. I will try to point out the more notable things during each post. Here are the final four pages of the script. Spragg informs Glimmer of He-Man's appearance...

The one and only Goat Man!

In all my years of being a fan of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the worst kept secret is that I hate Goat Man, the one-shot villain that appeared in the Golden Book story "Secret of the Dragon's Egg". My problem with the character is that he has to be one of the laziest characters in the history of the brand. Whereas most, if not all, of the Evil Warriors had a purpose to their design, Goat Man is just a big guy with a goat's head. There is nothing more than that. His design and look is incredibly uninspiring. I am thankful that the character never made any other appearances beyond this book. Although, that Andros fellow in the first episode of The New Adventures of He-Man, he does bear more than a passing resemblance to Goat Man...

Smallen's expressions.

The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe model packs often contain some wonderful surprises. In the model pack for the season one He-Man episode "Keeper of the Ancient Ruins" we see model sheets of Professor Smallen. However, we also see a few pages of character expressions, which are always a joy to behold, as the artists often steer clear of the Filmation rules, and we are treated to very unique poses and expressions...

Rachney model sheet.

One of the many memorable aspects of the season two He-Man episode "Origin of the Sorceress" is the fact that it features the first appearance of the Evil Horde. The three unnamed representatives of the Horde clearly sport the emblem that we would soon associate with the villains featured in the She-Ra series. Here is a model sheet featuring Rachney, described in the script as the "spider-like Horde soldier"...

"Island of Terror" #4

Here I present the final four pages of an action-packed story from issue seventy-two of the UK Masters of the Universe comic. This issue, featuring the story "Island of Terror", was actually the last issue of the regular series. After this issue only Masters of the Universe Adventure was published. The final pages in this story have some fantastically detailed panels that are awe-inspiring. And the Disappearing Sea is such a good idea that it should have appeared in other canons...
